چکیده

Aims. We study an anomaly in the X-ray flux (or luminosity) ratio between the Ovii λλ21.6-22.1 triplet and the Oviii Lyα line seen in classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). This ratio is unusually high when compared with ratios for mainsequence and non-accreting T Tauri stars (Telleschi et al. 2007). We compare these samples to identify the source of the excess. A sample of recently discovered X-ray stars with a soft component attributed to jet emission is also considered. Methods. We discuss data obtained from the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST) project, complemented by data from the published literature. We also present data from the CTTS RU Lup. Results. All CTTS in the sample show an anomalous Ovii/Oviii flux ratio when compared with WTTS or MS stars. The anomaly is due to an excess of cool, Ovii emitting material rather than a deficiency of hotter plasma. The excess plasma must therefore have temperatures of ∼ 2 MK. This soft excess does not correlate with UV excesses of CTTS, but seems to be related with the stellar X-ray luminosity. The spectra of the jet-driving TTS do not fit into this picture. Conclusions. The soft excess depends both on the presence of accretion streams in CTTS and on magnetic activity. The gas may be shock-heated near the surface, although it may also be heated in the magnetospheric accretion funnels. The soft component of the jet-driving sources is unlikely to be due to the same process.

X-rays from young stars – a summary of highlights from the XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST)

The XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (XEST) is a survey of the nearest large star-forming region, the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC), making use of all instruments on board the XMM-Newton X-ray observatory. The survey, presently still growing, has provided unprecedented spectroscopic results from nearly every observed T Tauri star, and from ≈50% of the studied brown dwarfs...

Evidence for Accretion in the High - resolution X - ray Spectrum of the T Tauri Star System Hen 3 - 600

We present high-resolution X-ray spectra of the nearby, multiple T Tauri star (TTS) system Hen 3-600, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph (HETGS) aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). Both principle binary components of Hen 3-600 (A and B, separation 1.4) were detected in the zeroth-order CXO/HETGS X-ray image. Hen 3-600-A — the component with a large mid-infra...

XMM - Newton spectroscopy of the metal depleted T Tauri star TWA 5

We present results of X-ray spectroscopy for TWA 5, a member of the young TW Hydrae association, observed with XMM-Newton. TWA 5 is a multiple system which shows Hα emission, a signature typical of classical T Tauri stars, but no infrared excess. From this analysis of the RGS and EPIC spectra, we have derived the emission measure distribution vs. temperature of the X-ray emitting plasma, its ab...

X-ray optical depth diagnostics of T Tauri accretion shocks

Context. In classical T Tauri stars, X-rays are produced by two plasma components: a hot low-density plasma, with frequent flaring activity, and a high-density lower temperature plasma. The former is coronal plasma related to the stellar magnetic activity. The latter component, never observed in non-accreting stars, could be plasma heated by the shock formed by the accretion process. However it...

We present spatially-resolved X-ray observations of the binary T Tauri star system V710 Tau. Using Chandra’s Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS), we imaged this 3.2 separation binary system, consisting of a classical T Tauri star, V710 Tau N, and a weak-lined T Tauri star, V710 Tau S. The Chandra ACIS-S3 images — obtained in two 9 ks exposures separated by about three months (2004 December...
